A social safety net for people who are struggling is organized by the Mevrouw Pon Foundation in the northern Thai district of Chiang Mai. The Foundation established two schools for children from mountain tribes who otherwise would not learn the Thai language. The children eventually continue in regular primary education. The Foundation also cares about the fate of refugees from Thailand’s neighboring countries.
Pon’s support is always aimed at enabling people to help themselves as much as possible. By establishing a coffee plantation and creating a drinking water supply, the standard of living has improved for many families in remote villages.
For the elderly, the Mevrouw Pon Foundation founded a nursing home. Other elderly people are supported in their own living environment with a monthly amount of rice or a small financial contribution to buy additional food. Orphans and children whose parents cannot care for them are taken in at the children’s home that bears the foundation’s name. And finally, everyone can count on the ambulance that the foundation deploys in this remote area if necessary. Besides transporting people to a hospital, the foundation also pays for treatment and medicines.
The Mevrouw Pon Foundation (founded in 2008) operates with a number of Thai staff who are partly paid for their work and partly volunteer. Mrs. Sompon Chairat runs the foundation from the Netherlands. In the Netherlands, she owns a Thai take-away in Almere. Before that, she had the Chiang Mai eatery, a Thai restaurant on Havenstraat in Hilversum. The money she earns with her take-away restaurant and the donations for the foundation go one hundred percent to maintaining current projects and possibly developing new initiatives.
