The municipality of Gennep has a sister city relationship with San Pedro de Lóvago in Nicaragua. Since 1994, we, Stichting GESP, have given content to this cooperation and – in close consultation with the municipal government – maintain contacts with the partner organizations in the sister city in Nicaragua. Global citizenship and strengthening support for international relations and connections are principles; connecting and cooperating are key words.
Together with other private organizations and companies, we support projects that contribute to improving social and economic conditions in San Pedro de Lóvago. We focus on three pillars: social inclusion, basic facilities, and economic development (income-generating projects and employment). Results and the impact of the projects may overlap. Our commitment is to bring in knowledge, skills, and expertise and provide financial support where necessary.
For example, we have been working for years in the rural area of San Pedro de Lóvago with partner organization Quitulia on the program 'all children to school'. Often children cannot go to school because they have to work to help their family, which often does not have enough resources. Sometimes also because there is much work on their parents' farm. Children have to fetch water, sometimes walking more than 2 hours with a bucket of water. That is why the construction of water pipes is so important. In a small community, such a gravity-driven water pipe has already been installed. Wastewater from the kitchen is reused for vegetable gardens around the house. Clean drinking water, vegetables, and going to school: on the way to a more promising future.
